But it did bring to mind one thing I find kind of cutesy in an annoying sort of way: Mac's names for theis OSs. It's all very well and good for us to talk about panthers and tigers and jaguars, but I just can NOT keep track of which is which. I wish they would just stick to the numerical naming system so that I can immediately tell the relationship between 2 OSs. Know what I mean? I'm just an ignorant biologist, I could tell you about the cats' taxonomic relationships, but MAC does not follow that in their OS evolution pathway, so I'm often confused. :P
Well, I can see your point. But every one of their releases also has a number. If you read, you'll see that Leopard is OS X 10.5. Tiger is 10.4, Panther was 10.3, Jaguar was 10.2, and Puma was 10.1. Oh, and 10.0 was Cheetah. The whole list can be found at http://applepedia.com/Apple_Product_Codenames
Yea, but half the mac users out there know one code, half know another code, and never the twain shall meet - I can't count the number of times I've had someone say "oh, it's panther" and I say "uh, which number is panther, again?" and they say "uh, I don't know - the latest one? Maybe the one before that?"
Oddly, this doesn't bug me nearly as much with Windows, perhaps because Windows doesn't choose alarmingly similar terms which all mean something different (Vista notwithstanding) - XP is not NT is not 2K etc, but the Apple OS codenames all boil down to "big cat" in my head.
Although they do allow for some pretty funny "OS 11: Tabby" jokes. :)
