So…  Amanda and I have decided that we’re going to go to Pittsburgh this summer to visit her brother. And since we’ll be there anyway…  Let’s take the toddler to Pennsic!  What could possibly go wrong?

Pennsic, for those who don’t know, is an SCA camping event that regularly draws over 10,000 people. It’s two weeks long, although we are only planning on going for the second week, called War Week.

For those who do know, we don’t yet have an encampment. Got room in yours? Also, have you camped with a toddler who may or may not be potty trained? Advice and support much appreciated.

So, our toddler was on the fence about training, and Pennsic was a good week to take training off the schedule. Sadly, it meant disposable diapers, but in many ways these were better for handling heat and, of course, did not need laundering.

Expect to spend a lot of time at the playground. It is actually reasonable and some of the classes should be accessible. Water, shade, sunscreen... all the things adults need kids need even more.

The plus side is that all the time outdoors and running and having fun meant that sleep was always pretty good.

It's getting kind of late to find an encampment, I'm afraid -- IIRC, the deadline for groups to get their info in is about now. Some might have space reserved for ghosts or folks who dropped, but I recommend asking around quickly...

To what are you referring? Prereg is open for 19 more days.

Okay, loose definition of "about now". But Lochleven is about to send in its group reservation, and I suspect a lot of other groups are doing so as well; waiting until the last minute isn't a great idea...

I think Camp Crook'd Cat successfully had three families with toddlers last year. It turns out that parents with young children and performers have similar needs WRT camp expectations. We'd be happy to have you.
